The 2018 Abbey Medieval Festival program will offer a number of workshops, hosted right in the thick of re-enactors’ encampments.

13th Century re-enactment group Oltramar will be offering 3 craft-based workshops each day of the Festival weekend. For a small fee, which covers the cost of the workshop materials, participants will learn traditional techniques and get to take their work home.

Laid-and-couched embroidery workshop with Oltramar

Laid-and-couched embroidery is a quick and easy method of decorating fabric with yarn; it’s most popularly known as the method used to produce the Bayeux Tapestry.

During this workshop, Oltramar will teach you the skill for this embroidery. Linen, yarn and needles will be supplied and participants will get to take their work home.

Time: 10:30am

Making a paternoster workshop with Oltramar

The paternoster was the predecessor to the rosary and was a must-have accoutrement, worn by both peasant and noble.

During this workshop, Oltramar will teach participants how to make a knotted bead string, and will also cover the cultural significance of various sorts of stones and beads—some of the beliefs that medieval folk had about crystals can still be seen today.

All materials for the workshop will be supplied and participants will get to take their work home.

Fringes and tassels workshop with Oltramar

Fringes were used to finish off the end of various household fabrics, and tassels were a popular form of decoration.

This workshop is designed to teach the art of making a twisted fringe, and how to make woollen tassels. Linen, yarn and needles will be supplied and participants will get to take their work home.
